After reading rave reviews about this restaurant, I decided it was definitely time to try it especially since my foodie sister was coming in town, and she absolutely loves trying new restaurants!
Arriving for our 7:30 reservation we were seated promptly out in the courtyard (which I had requested in my OpenTable reservation thanks to fellow yelper’s recommendations).
Despite the chilly temperatures, there are plenty of heaters out in the courtyard to keep customers nice and toasty all throughout dinner. The foodies that we are, my sister and I decided to order a slew of dishes to share so that we could try a little bit of everything. One thing we didn’t realize was just how small the portions were. However, those small portions were incredible! Everything we tried was met with a “oooooooo… that’s SOOOO good” as we moaned and chewed (we probably received some strange looks, but when food is this good, who cares, right?!)
As for the specifics, we started with the oysters. After asking our server for a recommendation, we were pleasantly surprised by how amazing and fresh they were. We tried the Kusshi and the Miyagi oysters, which were served with a light herbal sauce, delicious.
Next we had the Beef Carpaccio, which is sliced super super thin, dressed with a horseradish sauce and sprinkled with perfect decadent homemade potato chips that put Lays to shame. Next was the Brandade Gratin (which now I can’t even tell you what it is) but it was so good we almost asked for another one. It is served with toasted baguette slices, however, once those ran out, we used the remainder of our table bread to wipe the bowl clean.
Next up, was a yellowtail ceviche-type of dish that was really fresh and tasty as well. Our last dish was the calamari (which was probably the smallest of the plates) but delicious nevertheless. The calamari was sauteed rather than fried, and the spices they used were so unique and delicious.
Since we weren’t full, rather than order another plate, we decided to order the cheese plate for dessert which was the perfect ending to such a delicious meal. We ordered the two cheese selection, both goat’s milk and they were amazing. One of our favorite things is great cheese paired with fruit preserves, it just doesn’t get any better than that.
Another unique feature of Foreign Cinema is that they serve half bottles of wine which between two people is perfect. It lasted all throughout our dinner and then we were able to order a sweeter, dessert wine to have with our cheese. Sometimes a full bottle between two people and then dessert wine can be a bit much, so this half bottle method works out quite well.
Overall, I would definitely put Foreign Cinema on my favorites list. From the delicious food, the wonderful (very attentive) service to the unique decor, this place rates pretty high in my book. Great place to take out-of-town guests or go to for special occasions.
